Overview

Where the Keymaster builds civilization through order, collaboration, knowledge, and commerce, the Lord of Deception works to unmake it — through lies, cultivated resentment, the erosion of trust, and the slow dissolution of every institution the Keymaster has inspired mortals to build.

He is not a separate god. He is the Keymaster's shadow: the force that exists because the Keymaster exists, the negative that defines the positive. A civilization that can be built can also be unbuilt. The Lord of Deception is the theology of unbuilding.

His domain in the material world is the underground — literally the space beneath civilization's foundations, where nothing the Keymaster values reaches. The Ancient Paths are his territory: dark, unmapped, ungoverned, forgotten by the surface world.

The Caligni

When humans fleeing the Age of Strife were driven underground and trapped — expelled from the ordered world above — the Lord of Deception found them there and embraced them. He helped the Caligni survive in the deep dark, offering guidance, sustenance, and power in exchange for devotion. While nurturing their bodies, he cultivated something else: a profound, generational hatred for the surface world — for civilization, for order, for everything the Keymaster stands for.

The Caligni became his instruments. Generations of underground isolation and his influence transformed them into something barely recognizable as human, shaped entirely around the destruction of the world above.

The Iceflame Queen is the most powerful Caligni to emerge from the Ancient Paths and the Lord of Deception's chosen agent on the surface.

Distinction from The Dark

The Lord of Deception is not The Dark. The Dark is an out-of-world cosmological force, unrevealed and operating through the Astral Plane. The Lord of Deception is native to Zoratha — the Keymaster's own negative aspect, operating entirely within this world's theological structure.
