Overview
The Flame is native to Zoratha — unlike The Light, which is a universal force, The Flame grew from this world's own mythology and need.
It is the opposition of the dark depths of the ocean: the primal contrast between fire and lightless water, between warmth and cold void. The Flame showed light to the catfolk of the eastern desert and gave them a core identity — resilience and freedom. Its central teaching is simple: bow to no tyrant.
Teachings
The Flame does not offer complex theological systems. Its teachings are felt more than studied:
- Endure what would break others.
- Light a fire when there is darkness.
- Accept no master you did not choose.
- A free people are harder to kill than a conquered one.
These values shape the Catfolk Caliphates — independent cities that resist consolidation under any single ruler, each handling the hostile desert in their own ingenious ways (shade structures, underground houses, oasis settlements).
Beyond the Catfolk
The Flame is not exclusively a catfolk deity, but it is most deeply rooted there. On Ardentis, The Flame is known but not widely practiced — it is considered an eastern religion, exotic and fierce. Travelers who have spent time in the eastern desert often carry a quiet respect for it.
