Nature

The Destroyer is the negative aspect of the Dwarfather — where the Dwarfather builds, endures, and shapes, the Destroyer unmakes. He is ancient and has existed as long as civilization has existed to be destroyed.

He operates through catastrophe rather than sustained influence. His power in the material world waxes and wanes with the presence of destruction among living peoples — when civilization prospers and builds, his followers thin and his material footprint shrinks.

The Asteroid Strike (~-300 AR)

After a long era of relative prosperity across the civilized world, The Destroyer had been reduced to near-absence in the material plane — barely a whisper in the theological landscape. The accumulated, bottled energy of that absence produced its own catastrophic pressure.

He used it. Drawing on centuries of unreleased power, The Destroyer summoned an asteroid and drove it into Maelia — the name the civilized world gave the southern continent, now remembered by few, more commonly called the Shadowlands, the Farlands, or the Cursed Lands.

The impact formed a vast crater at the continent's center. The crater became a nexus of necromantic energy, fed by the force of the strike and sustained by The Destroyer's ongoing influence.

Aftermath

The civilized peoples of Maelia — all races — retreated to the northern coasts and to the eastern swamp territories, surviving at the margins. Most eventually fled north across what became the Dark Sea in the founding exodus (~-50 AR).

Those who remained — primarily orcs, goblins, hobgoblins, trolls, gnolls, and giants — were drawn toward the crater and its energies. The transformation that followed was generational:

  • Orcs were tainted by The Destroyer's necromantic field and became dark orcs — still recognizably orc in form but fundamentally altered in nature, drawn to destruction, serving The Destroyer through Noria
  • Other small humanoids that failed to adapt or refused subjugation were destroyed outright
  • Giants evolved into shadow giants under the sustained necromantic influence — larger, darker, and bound to the crater's power

Noria

Noria was given to The Destroyer as a servitor — a gift from forces operating at a cosmological level he cannot fully perceive. She commands his shadow giants and dark orcs, administers his domain in the Shadowlands, and resides in a city built in the shape of a pentagram within the crater.

The Destroyer does not know that Noria's true nature connects to The Dark's cross-world plan — or that the plan will consume him as well. He regards her as his instrument. He is not wrong. He is also not the one holding the chain.
