The North

Overview

The northern region of Ardentis is defined by bitter cold, hostile terrain, and the ever-present pressure of the giant kingdoms. The dominant season is winter. As you travel north, temperatures drop sharply — past River Bonk, the land becomes actively hostile to unprepared travelers. The terrain grows increasingly mountainous toward Iceflame Spire.

Climate & Terrain

  • Frosty, windy, winter-dominant year-round
  • Flat to rolling south of River Bonk; rugged and mountainous to the north
  • River Bonk marks the practical boundary of safe travel

Power Structure

The north is divided between two forces:

The Iceflame Queen rules from Iceflame Spire, commanding Frost Giants, Fire Giants, and Stone Giants with an iron fist. She is an agent of the Lord of Deception and exerts constant pressure on the League of Dwarven Trade Cities.

The League of Dwarven Trade Cities — Hodoronk, Tronk, Whitedove Harbor, and Sandshore Harbor — form a powerful collective of dwarven civilization, guided by worship of the Dwarfather.

Key Locations

Iceflame Spire

Fortress built inside a mountain at the far north of Ardentis. Seat of the Iceflame Queen, ruler of Frost, Fire, and Stone Giants. One of the most dangerous locations on the continent. Encounter level: 18+.

Iron Fortress

Former palace of the Stone Giant nation, which once ruled over the marsh giants and held a proper kingdom. After Iceflame conquered the Stone Giants, the marsh giants were driven south into the Latan Swamp. Now a ruin with strategic significance.

Hodoronk

The primary city of the League. A dwarven metropolis of over 30,000 — trade, craftsmanship, and military power at the highest level, guided by the Dwarfather. Encounter level: 12–16.

Tronk

Satellite outpost of Hodoronk, positioned to guard against giant incursions. Heavily militarized, populated with high-level defenders. Encounter level: 10–15.

Whitedove Harbor

One of the two largest League cities, facing the Frostveil Ocean. Major trade and crafting hub. Friendly rivalry with Sandshore Harbor. Metropolis, 30,000+. Encounter level: 12–16.

Sandshore Harbor

Sister city to Whitedove Harbor. Equal in size, trade, and cultural output. The two cities compete warmly across commerce, craft, and culture under the guidance of the Dwarfather. Metropolis, 30,000+. Encounter level: 12–16.

Geography Notes

  • River Bonk — great river flowing between Hodoronk and Tronk. Northern boundary of relatively safe travel.
  • The mountain ranges of the north connect underground to the rest of the island via the Ancient Paths.
  • Dwarves who first settled Ardentis traveled the east coast and founded Whitedove Harbor before naming the inland mountain ranges — hence names like "South Mountains" refer to the dwarves' southern journey, not the island's actual geography.
